Tennesseans don’t want guns in bars, legislators do

Guns and alcohol don’t mix. That may be the single strongest insight from an MTSU poll announced today.

Tennesseans overwhelmingly do not want guns in bars, and they also don’t want them in restaurants and parks. Eighty percent of respondents opposed allowing guns in bars, even though the legislature passed a law permitting them this past spring. Smaller majorities (60 percent and 54 percent, respectively) didn’t want guns in restaurants and parks.

It may be wishful thinking, but I sure hope legislators will take these numbers to heart when the next session opens in January. (They won’t.)

At least ONLY guns in bars passed

Now that the British Broadcasting Corporation is covering Tennessee’s obsession with liberating the populace from oppressive gun laws, I keep reminding myself that it could have been worse: English Only could have passed. I sure am proud of our state legislature.

Meanwhile, Big Gay Al is on the case, making sure that we “untrustworthy Tennesseans” know that “drinking while carrying a firearm is a bad idea.” (Surely there are more pressing issues in Michigan these days than weighing in on Tennessee gun laws.)
