Sullivan, Ellis talk smack via Twitter

SullyEllisTwitter

Here’s another reason to love Twitter: Smack talk between NHL players. Granted, they’re teammates, but I enjoyed seeing Preds’ right wing Steve Sullivan and goaltender Dan Ellis jawing back and forth online about today’s scrimmage, which the Silver squad won against the Blue squad by a score of 5-4. Sullivan has been tweeting for months, announcing his re-signing with the Preds and his thoughts on the team’s forthcoming third jersey along the way. Ellis is a relative newcomer to microblogging, but he’s catching on quickly.

Twitter is providing a glimpse inside the lives of professional athletes that would have been unheard of even a couple of years ago. I hope PacMan Jones never decides to register for a Twitter account.

Does Sully equal success?

The Preds would have finished in fifth place (101 points) in the Western Conference and faced the Chicago Blackhawks in the playoffs last year, if they’d fared as well all season as they played once Steve Sullivan returned from injury. Nashville’s record down the stretch translates into 45 wins, 26 losses and 11 overtime losses over the course of 82 games.

Since the Blackhawks ultimately wound up in the Conference finals, we’ll never know whether the Preds might have ended their winless streak in the NHL’s first playoff round. We also don’t know whether the Preds’ late season success and offseason departures will translate into good results in next season’s standings.

Preds could sure use whatever Sully has left

The Preds are hanging tough in seventh place the Western Conference, but having playmaker Steve Sullivan back on the roster would sure provide a boost.

“When I got hurt, I was at my best in my career,” he said. “I was the best I’ve ever been. I feel that if I can get back to the ice, I still can have a lot to give. And I love the game.”

I should know better than to get my hopes up after Sullivan has had such a hard time overcoming his injury.
Having Sully back–and somewhere near his former self–might help the Preds get a look at something else they’ve been longing to see: the second round of the playoffs.
